High Schools Short of 1.2 Million Teachers by 2005
China will require an additional 1.16 million senior high school teachers and 110,000 college teachers by 2005, according to an official report released recently by the Ministry of Education.

Cause of Pneumonia Outbreak in Guangdong Identified
Chlamydia has been identified as the cause of a pneumonia outbreak that hit six cities in south China's Guangdong Province recently. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in cooperation with the Guangdong Center for Disease Control and Prevention, found chlamydia, a virus-like bacteria, in two specimens taken from the lungs of patients who died from the strain of pneumonia. The particles of chlamydia in the lung cell plasma were also very typical, the two centers said in a report.

American International Corps De Ballet Visited Beijing

Kidnapped Chinese diplomats rescued in Guinea Bissau
Gao Kexiang, the ambassador of China to Guinea Bissau, and two of his colleagues were rescued by local police after being kidnapped for four hours by a group of armed men. The kidnapping took place in the port city of Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau at 11:30 pm local time on Monday. Reports say that Guinea Bissau President Kumba Yalla and other top leaders visited the Chinese embassy on Tuesday morning to offer their sympathy to the diplomats. They pledged to bring the criminals to justice.

Mayor Meets With Samsung Company President
Mayor of Tianjin, Dai Xianglong, recently met with Jin Chunze, president of Samsung SDI zhushi agencies, South Korea. Among the topics discussed were how to further strengthen the cooperation and good relationship between the company and the city.
On behalf of Municipal Government, Dai warmly welcomed Jin Chunze's visit. He expressed congratulations on the achievements of Tianjin Samsung Co., Ltd's roduce and sales. Dai said Tianjin located Bohai economic Zone will become one of the most developed districts in China. Dai said the electronic information technology was Tianjin's most important industry. Dai said that Tianjin municipal government would fully support Samsung to increase investment and create a better investment environment. Jin Chunze thanked the Tianjin Municipal Govt.
He said he was confident that the company would become the No.1 kinescope producer.

Jinji Highway, which connected municipal center with back garden, Ji County will be open to traffic this year. The whole investment is 4 billion RMB and the length is 102.6 kilometers from Jinzhong Road to 3 kilometers Ji county.


Not Everyone Got to Join in the Festivities of the Spring FestivalÉ.
Many of the workers at Tianjin Baili Environment Protection Equipment Group, one of the largest production bases for environment production equipment in North China, remained on duty during this year's Spring Festival.
Baili group, established 2 years ago, has been developing rapidly as a manufacturer of garbage disposal and water treatment equipment.
Recently, the group signed a contract with a local private business on establishing a new type of garbage disposal plant, with a daily garbage handling capacity of 400 tons, and involves an investment of 40 million yuan. All of the equipment at the plant are to be produced by Baili Group.


Good Day for 110 of Tianjin's Taxi Drivers
February 13 was a great day for Tianjin's 110 good taxi drivers. At a meeting at the Tianjin Hotel, Liu Shengyu, Deputy Secretary of Tianjin Municipal Party Committee named them the Top Ten Taxi Drivers and the 100 Excellent Taxi Drivers, respectively. In his speech, he said that the performance of the taxi service demonstrates the city's cultural and ethical progress and produces great influence on Tianjin's opening-up and economic development. He hoped that the taxi-drivers should enhance their sense of responsibility and strive to provide good service in an effort to present a good image.


Things Looking Up for Tianjin's Unemployed Industrial Sector
2002 was a brighter year for the city's unemployed industrial workers, as many were re-employed. This is due to the city's industrial sector devoting great efforts to creating jobs and expanding channels of employment. By the end of last December, over 45,000 job opportunities had been created and over 33,000 of those laid-off had been put back to work. The re-employment center fulfilled its mission to secure employments for all the laid-offs and connect with the un-employed insurance system. At the same time, the industrial sector also asked for support from financial and labor departments to raise 146 million yuan of special extra funds for the retired workers and staff members.


Tianjin Woman Volleyball Team Meet Funs
On Feb. 12nd, the Tianjin Bridgestone Woman Volleyball Team met the funs at Tianjin Daily Building. The general coach, Wang Baoquan and Chang Liangcai and other team members communicated with funs directly and answered many questions. More than 100 funs fortunately received their signatures.
