An
Ancient Town: Yangliuqing and her treasures
The
old city of Yangliuqing, 1,000 years old, to be exact, is famous for
its communal products, which was New Year Paintings.
One of the most notable buildings in the city is
the Shi Mansion which was called the No 1 Mansion in North China.
It belonged to the Shi family which was one of the eight most prominent
families in Tianjin during the Qing Dynasty.
The mansion covers an area of 6,080 sqm and has
four rows of buildings made from brick, wood and stone. The mansion
is now open to the public as the Yangliuqing Folk Customs Museum.
The museum consists of 12 courtyards designed in
a Chinese traditional quadrangle style with a long paved path leading
to all the
yards from the front gate. On the east side of the path are the
former bedrooms and living rooms which now serve as the exhibition
area.
On display here are the Yangliuqing New Year woodblock
printed pictures throughout the ages. Yangliuqing kites, paper-cuts
and props for temple fairs, all with a flavor of folk art, are displayed
together with local wedding customs.
On the west side of the path are the former Shi
family's grand hall, opera tower and Buddhist shrine for receiving
guests, entertainment, pastimes, chanting sutras and worshipping
god. On both sides are houses in Ming and Qing styles, with a total
floor space of 10,000 sqm.
