On these cold winter nights, when most of us would like to stay indoors and cuddle up, the rest of Tianjin are out and about enjoying the freezing temperatures! Crowds continue to flock to many night spots in Tianjin to soak up the might life and indulge in that all important activity-shopping!

A few weeks ago, on Nov 8 to be exact we decided to investigate a few of these haunts and find out more about these nocturnal goings-on. We went to Binjiang Road, Xinhua Road and Hebei Road at around 7 in the evening.

Our first stop was Binjiang Road which is by far the most popular place to go for shopping and just wandering about. Binjiang Road is to Tianjin just as Nanjing Road is to Shanghai and Xiushui Street is to Beijing. It is the ``mostest" and is the most important commercial walking street in Tianjin. It definitely very ``shopper-friendly."It remains a popular shopping area despite the glamourous Isetan directly opposite as well as the new Exchange Plaza diagonally opposite.

We asked a few shopers what the attraction was in wandering around Binjiang late at night. ``Well, all the shops are still open and it's a lot of fun to check out what's new and also to bargain, " said a young but veteran shopper.

A Unique Dining Experience

Dining out used to be very rare for the Chinese until a few years ago. But times have changed drastically and now everyone is out and about to explore the many cuisines and dining experiences.

Even the traditional stay-home festivals such as the Chinese New Year is now celebrated at hotels and restaurants where one can make a statement on one's status, prestige and even wealth at the same time.

Also eateries are becoming the more popular `business venue'. Just think about it, isn't it easier and more conducive to handle business matters over good food than in the stuffy office? Dining and especially wining is important when sealing business deals or simply when establishing good `guanxi'.

What are the more popular restaurants during winter? Hotpot is No.1 with Water Boiled Fish restaurants a close second. Both import from Sichuan Province, these cuisines are popular for their hot temperatures and their spicy taste.

While the former is well known, the water boiled dining experience is not familiar especially among foreigners. The dish is equally spicy and enjoyed with great relish by locals.

Western food
When we mention of Western food, we can't help to talk about Broadway Cafe (recently renamed Mojo) as it is one of the earliest and well known Western restaurant in Tianjin. Being the only western outlet in Tianjin for a long time, it thus has garnered a following among foreigners and locals alike here.

However the Tianjin dining landscape is fast changing and we have Cozy cafe the newly opened Thank God Its Friday Restaurant and the Renaissance CafŽ at the Renaissance Hotel too.

These places are seeing more and more local clientele as Tianjiners expand their Western dining experience.

Disco fever

Disco has been popular for several years in Tianjin. Everyone has whiled away a good hour or two at most of the city's night spots. One of the more popular ones is the Tianlong Disco Bar.

When we dropped in one night at 9, the music was thumping, the music was raging and the people were booging to their heartsÕ content. It was loud, smoky and dark, just how a nightclub should be. Although the cover charge here was RMB 20 per person, the place was packed and almost all the RMB600 VIP setas were taken up, which just shows Tianjiners love to have a `spankingÕ good time.

Fitness

Gyms and health centers are not well frequented by Tianjiners as the fitness fad has not really caught on. In addition the cityÕs health spots are far from being well equipped or comfortable.

Gyms memberships are also quite expensive and in China, the realm of the gym has become the domain of mostly the rich and well paid.

The gyms usually fill up after 6, with mostly the after office crowd trying to sweat their fat away.

As in most places around the world, the population here is
mostly female, with all shapes and sizes torturing life and limb in the dream of their ideal weight and shape.

Tianjin kfc
Since the first KFC restaurant opened in Tianjin in July 1994, 23 branches have since arrived. And so have other fast food chains, so KFC's competition is growing rapidly and the local taste buds are becoming more and more demanding and the customers require more of a cultural atmosphere when they visit fastfood chains, such as KFC.

It is surveyed that KFC's target customers are between 8 and 25 years old. And so, KFC tries its best to attract these customers. Nearly at every branch gate, there stands the Kentucky captain to welcome customers, which is fondly called "Kentucky grandpa" by the children.

This just likes our life, whether our spirit now, always go ahead. Bottom up the last coffee, settle the luggage, face the reality bravely.

Tianjin Odeum Theatre
The Tianjin Odeum was named by ex-premier Zhou and is located at the crossing between Xuzhou Road and Dagunan Road. This theatre boasts an 81-year history. It is two-storied and has 890 seats. The stage can hold a 100-member symphony band. After the cultural revolution and the devastating earthquake, the acoustics, lamplight equipment and architecture were heavily damaged. But, the tone is still said to be the best in Tianjin. This is because the walls were built with yellow mud and sand, etc. and the sound from the stage easily passes to every corner in the hall. This theatre is run by the General Manager Wangchen. It is quite easy to get to this theatre as many bus-lines are available to take you there.

Daguangming Cinema
Just as its name implies, Daguangming Cinema is located at No. 1, Qufu Road, beside Daguangming Bridge. It was built in 1923, and features advanced digital surround sound. The cinema is clean and comfortable. It is two-storied and may seat up to 700. The box office sells high and classic rank tickets. And there are small evening shows during festivals and holidays. Many Chinese movie celebs have come here, such as: Feng Xiaogang¡¢Zhang Yimou¡¢Wu Qianlian Zhao Benshan¡¢Fu Biaoetc. American films will be featured in December, so don't miss them, movie fans!
